Laptop inverter boards (also know as LCD inverter, FL inverter, screen inverter, backlight inverter) come in different shapes and sizes. On the picture above you see some typical looking inverter boards found in laptop computers.

The inverter board works as a power supply for the backlight lamp mounted inside the LCD screen. The inverter board converts low voltage DC power (few volts) supplied by the motherboard to high voltage AC power (few hundred volts) needed for the backlight lamp. When the inverter board works properly, the backlight lamp gets power and the LCD screen lights up. As a result, the image on the screen is bright. HOW INVERTER CONNECTED TO LDC SCREEN On the picture below you can see a typical laptop display assembly which includes the LCD screen, video cable and inverter board. One side of the inverter board connects to the backlight lamp and another side to the video cable (LCD screen cable). HOW INVERTER MOUNTED INSIDE LAPTOP DISPLAY PANEL In most laptops the inverter board is mounted below the LCD screen as it shown on the picture below.

You can get an access to the inverter board when you remove the screen bezel – a plastic frame around the LCD screen. TYPICAL INVERTER FAILURE SYMPTOMS Usually inverters fail in one of the following ways: 1. When you turn on the laptop, the screen lights up for a short period of time and then goes dark. You still can see an image but it is very dark, almost invisible and definitely not usable. When you restart the laptop, the screen lights up and then goes dark again.

I have tried a different video card and it looks the same. I assume this problem appears even before Windows starts loading. It’s not software related, right?

From my experience I can tell that pinkish tone on white backgrounds might indicate a problem with the backlight lamp but you also mentioned that the image is fuzzy looking and that could be a problem with the LCD video cable. You can try replacing the video cable. Before you replace the cable, try reseating connectors on the motherboard and LCD screen.

Maybe it’s just a connection related issue. Test the laptop after you reconnected the cable. If a new cable will not fix the problem, I guess you’ll have to replace the LCDs screen. Adam, I have an issue with my HP Pavilion dv9000 that matches the symptoms of a typical inverter failure (the first description). I ordered a new inverter from HP and installed it and it is still having the same issue. What should be the next thing I replace? You are correct.

If you installed a new inverter board but still experience the same problem, probably it’s a bad backlight lamp. It’s not easy to replace the backligth lamp and you can damage the screen, so it might make sense to replace the whole LCD. Mitul, When I start my laptop, for a fraction of second Ill get the light on the screen but after that it will become dark( But still everything will display on the screen. Is it possible that for a fraction of second I am getting backlight it means lcd bulb is fine but the inverter is bad?? You cannot tell without testing the laptop with another working inverter or backlight lamp. Could be either one. If you have to guess, go with the inverter first.

It’s way easier to replace and is shouldn’t be very expensive. Duc, I have a hp compaq 8510p, and it have problem with inverter. I was trying to replace inverter, but unfortunately I couldn’t find any store sold hp compaq 8510p inverter. The best way to find a new compatible inverter would be searching by the HP spare part number from the old inverter. Take a closer look at the original inverter. Your problem could be related to the DC-IN power jack – the socket where you plug in the power adapter. It’s possible that the power jack is loose or broken and the laptop intermittently looses connection with the AC adapter and switches between AC mode and battery mode. Apparently the screen becomes dimer when the laptop switches to the battery mode because the screen brightness is set to lower level for this mode. Here’s what you can do. Plug in the AC adapter and wiggle the plug inside the power socket. Does the laptop looses AC power when you wiggle the plug?

Does the LCD screen flicker when you wiggle the plug? If it does, your problem could be related to the DC jack or maybe the AC adapter has a damaged cord. If there is nothing wrong with the power socket and the laptop not loosing power when you wiggle the adapter plug, there is a chance that you have a faulty inverter board. By the way, check out the link I posted in the comment #11. Maybe your dv6560 qualifies for a free repair. I have a dead acer laptop with (what I thought was) a working screen. I had a customer with a Compaq laptop with a nearly identical lcd screen that was cracked. I tried connecting my screen to the compaq, but no video came up and the inverter seemed to start to heat up. I immediately powered it off and later tried plugging it back into the dead acer (bad ata controller, actually works with usb boot media) now I get no video whatsoever on the LCD but external monitor works fine. Maybe it’s not plugged correctly. Try reconnecting the video cable. When you moved your LCD screen to the Compaq laptop you tried to turn it on with the customer’s inverter, right? It means, your inverter board stayed connected to the Acer and you couldn’t damage it. Am I missing something?

Take a closer look at the LCD on your Acer. Is it completely blank and black? Can you see any faint image at all?

If you cannot see any image and reconnecting the video cable doesn’t help, apparently you damaged the screen when tested it with the Compaq laptop. Even though both LCD screens look very similar, they might require different video cables. Connecting a good working LCD screen to a laptop with incompatible video cable can damage the screen. Repair guy I took the bevel from around the screen off today as well as the plastic piece from above the keyboard. I fired it up and wiggled and messed with all the wires. Moving wires did nothing but as I moved the screen the display would change.

Can you find a monitor for the test? You cannot tell if it’s a bad screen or motherboard until you test the external video output. Bradley, is there anyway I can check whether power is getting to the inverter. I think it’s possible to check voltage with a multimeter on the left side of the inverter board where it’s connected to the LCD cable. I believe you have to measure voltage between pin 1 and ground, but I’m not sure 100%.

You’ll have to get some low voltage DC readings. If there is no incoming voltage, it could be bad LCD cable or motherboard.

Did you try reconnecting the LCD cable connection on the motherboard? Maybe it’s loose connection?

Bradley, I’ve measured the voltage on the left hand side, not quite sure which is pin1 and ground but I do get a reading of 3 volts implying power is getting to the inverter I’m not sure but 3 volts seems to be low. I don’t have a multimeter with me and cannot confirm if that voltage is correct.

Maybe the new inverter I’ve bought is dead? It’s possible. I’ve seen that happening before. Did you but it from a reliable source?

Is it easy to get to the motherboard connection? It depends on the laptop model. On some laptops this connector could be found under the keyboard bezel. On other models it’s located under the keyboard.

Do I have to take the all the back off? No, but you’ll have to remove the keyboard bezel and maybe the keyboard too. If power is getting to the inverter is it neccesary to check the connection to the motherboard. In your case it looks like the power is getting to the inverter, so I assume the cable is seated correctly. Again, 3 volts seems to be low. I believe when I tested it last time (a couple of years ago), I was reading over 9 volts. By the way, do you have a display close switch on your laptop – a small button usually located close to one of the hinges.

When the display is closed, the button is pressed down and there is no voltage going to the inverter. Check the button. Maybe it’s dirty and got stuck inside the case and the laptop “thinks” the display is closed even though it’s open. Gareth Bradley, Original fault was cracked LCD, the backlight did work it was just the screen that was cracked, I’ve still got it and plugged it back in but the backlight on that will not light up. If I understand correctly, you bought a new LCD screen but the backlight will not light up? Try installing the old (cracked) screen back into the laptop.

Will it light up? If the backlight works fine on the cracked screen but not on the new one, apparently it’s either defective LCD screen or the screen is not compatible with the laptop. Roman, Whenever I have my laptop plugged in to the AC Adapter, my backlight will eventually turn off and will not turn on until after I have restarted or place the computer in sleep mode.

However, when it runs on battery, I have yet to see my backlight turn off. Could this still be an inverter problem? It’s hard to tell which one is causing the problem, the backlight lamp or inverter board. Here’s what you can try. Try reducing the LCD screen brightness for the AC mode (when the AC adapter is plugged in). On some laptops you can do that through the power management software in the control panel, on other laptops you can do that through a keyboard shortcut or in the BIOS settings. Make the LCD screen a little bit dimmer when the laptop is plugged into the adapter.

Will it help the backlight to stay on all the time or it still turns off even thought the brightness is reduced? I’ve got an HP DV6000. When I power it on, I get nothing on the screen.

Totally black. I pulled the panel off and I thought where the main flat LCD cable plugs into the motherboard, the wires in the cable might have gotten pinched or something becuase I saw the screen come on once or twice when working on it. I replaced the LCD’s ribbon cable and tested it and it fired up fine. I re-assembled the laptop and now there’s nothing on the screen again.

I was very gentle with the cable when re-assembling. Furthermore, nothing appears on an external monitor when the laptop is powered on.

The external LCD screen just sits there in power save mode. I’ve tried on both AC and battery power and nothing.

It could be either bad memory or motherboard. Try reconnecting memory modules. If you have two modules, remove them one by one. Test the laptop with each module separately.

Great article! I have a Compaq nx7300 (1.5 years old) and recently, I dropped my laptop on the ground. When I turned it back on, the screen was very dim although I can still see the images. I tried to adjust the dimmer but it didn’t lighten the screen. I then hooked the computer up to an external monitor and the image was able to display properly on the external monitor. I tried getting help from the tech support at my college, but they didn’t really do much and they told me that most likely it would cost 400 dollars to fix it. Unfortunately, it’s out of my budget.

The backlight lamp is mounted INSIDE the LCD screen and it’s very hard to replace. If you’ve never done it before, I would recommend replacing the whole LCD screen. You can find a new screen for your laptop on ebay, it’s about $60-70. I spilled a little water on the back of the screen cover, while it was closed, and since then it will not illuminate. If held at the right angle i am able to barely make out whats on the screen. Also, it works fine hooked to an external monitor. I read some of your previous posts and went ahead and took the screen apart. But when i disassembled the unit and reseated the display cable, the display was divided or tiled into 4 parts and when i tried reseating it again the display was totally lost (display on an external monitor is fine). I think there is a problem with the LCD screen. With a bad cable you can get distortion on the screen but it would not divide the screen into 4 images.

I cannot tell without testing your laptop with a KNOWN good inverter. Also, it’s possible that finally your backlight failed.

That tells me the motherboard and video card works properly. When you unplug the video cable from the LCD screen it turns completely white. The screen is bright and that means the inverter board and backlight work properly.

I don’t think that your problem is related to the LCD cable. From my experience, LCD cables do not fail like that. When the cable fails, the whole image gets garbled or the screen doesn’t turn on at all. I think your problem is related to the LCD screen. That means the backligth lamp and ivnerter work properly. Nope, it’s not the inverter problem.

Here are some troubleshooting tips: 1. Check connection between the video cable and motherboard. Make sure it’s plugged in correctly. Reconnect the cable just in case and test the laptop again. Try connecting the old LCD screen back to the laptop. If you still experience the same problem with the old screen (the bottom part doesn’t work) but your new screen has a different problem (fuzzy image), the new screen is either incompatible with the laptop or is bad.

It’s either a bad inverter board (which is most likely) or faulty backlight lamp (which is less likely). If you have no test equipment and have to guess, i would definitely try replacing the inverter board first. You don’t have to remove the whole display panel, it may stay attached to the laptop. Go straight to the Removing the Display Bezel instructions. As you see, the inverter board is attached to the bottom of the LCD screen. You’ll have to figure out how to remove the inverter and replace it with a new one.

I’d love to be able to do the repair myself and save a few $$s but I’ve never worked on my laptop and I have all the files for my company on it. Replacing the inverter board shouldn’t mess any data on the hard drive but if you don’t feel comfortable doing that, take the laptop to a repair shop. By the way, you can remove the hard drive from the laptop and install it into an external USB enclosure ($20-30 in a local computer store). After that you connect this enclosure to another working computer and access your data. If you get a garbled image on the external monitor, most likely your problem is related to the video card. The screen inverter board cannot affect image on the external monitor at all.

Both parts have very similar failure symptoms. In order to find out which one is causing the problem you’ll have to replace the inverter board ortest the laptop with a known good backlight lamp. Unbeknownst to her, the cap had fallen of the water bottle and the laptop had been sitting in about a 1/4″ of water for about an hour. The laptop was in standby and the backside (where the screen connects to the laptop) was the only part of the computer immersed in the water. After letting it dry thoroughly, we tested the computer. The laptop turns on and works fine with an external monitor. However, the screen remains extremely dark all the time with only a very dim image outline (can be seen with a flashlight).

Do you think it is the inverter, backlight, or both. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Pam, When i test them with a multimeter they all have 14.75 dc volts going in at the top pin one end but no ac at the other. Looks like the power gets to to inverter and the voltage is about right. You cannot test voltage on the other end with a multimeter. If so do you think that both replacements could be faulty? It’s possible but not very likely. I think you have a problem with the backlight lamp inside the LCD screen.

William, When I open my DV9740US HP Pavillion all the way, the black areas become red and dotty, but when I pull the screen towards me (to about where its 70 degrees open) – the screen goes back to normal. Do you see same problem on the external monitor when the laptop display is open all the way? If you do, there could be a problem with the video card.

If the problem appears only on the laptop screen and external video is fine, most likely it’s either cable related problem or bad LCD. You can try reconnecting the cable. Htnakirs, The display shows only lines and a pale gray colour, no image. The inverter is working fine, since with the signal cable unplugged the screen lights up white. That’s right.

If the screen lights up there is nothing wrong with the inverter board. On plugging the signal cable the lines return. I am not sure if it is the cable or the LCD to blame.

Test the laptop with an external monitor. Can you get video on the external monitor?

If you get the same bad image on both screens, there is a problem with the motherboard. Test your laptop with an external monitor first.

Mike, I have a Dell Vostro 1400. The display is just black. It does not work with a external monitor, the same results black screen. I can see the Dell logo when the laptop first boots. I can run the diagnostics, which detects no problems the video test is fine as well. I can see all the patterns.

I can go into the Bios without any problems. After the Dell logo comes up when I first boot the computer it goes black. No beeps or anything. Can you boot in Safe mode? When Dell logo appears on the screen, press F8 and select Safe Mode.

So we had to cut the old cable and attach it to the new one to connected. Now I am a bit worried because the screen is a bit brighter than the old one.

Most likely your problem is not related to the inverter board. To me it sounds like a problem with the motherboard. Apparenlty, the liquid went down to the motherboard and damged it. You’ll have to remove the top cover and take a closer look at the motherboard. If you see corrosion or any other sign of liquid damage, you’ll have to replace the motherboard. Last week I repaired one laptop with exactly the same problem description (it made a sound, like a zzzzzt and then a pop). I replaced the inverter board and it fixed it. First of all, I would try replacing the inverter. It shouldn’t be very expensive. If no help, you’ll need a new LCD screen.

Thanks Repair Man, Though I don’t see any signs at all of corrosion it seems there’s no coincidence this issue happened after the spill. Just that the laptop works fine except for the LCD, so I was hoping for a fix based on what I’ve read here. Worst case I guess will be to use it with an external monitor here on out. Sounds like the LCD screen is your laptop is cracked. When you have a broken screen the only way to fix it would be installing a new LCD screen.

You’ll have to disassemble the display panel (remove display bezel), unplug the cracked LCD screen from the video cable and inverter and replace it with a new screen. If no help, most likely it’s the motherboard failure. Liquid spills are very unpredictable. Even a small drop of liquid on the motherboard can fry the entire system. Tom, My daughter spilled tea on her Mac laptop yesterday. I let it dry upside down for a day and removed the battery.

It powers up and it looks like everything is working except the screen is dark. We can make out all the images, but too dark to work on. What is your best guess and what do you think I should do at this point. Did she spill it on the keyboard or display? If she spilled it on the keyboard, most likely the tea wend down to the motherboard and damaged it. Let it dry for some more time. Do not forget to remove the battery.

Tom, per Repair Man verify if you can plug in an external monitor and get a normal picture. That will confirm if your video card is working. In my case it works fine and the PC seems normal.

With a failed inverter the screen would be black all the time. It sounds more like a connection related issue. Here’s what you can try: 1. Try reconnecting video cable on the back of the LCD screen. Maybe the cable doesn’t make good connection with the screen.

Try replacing the video cable. It’s possible you have a short inside the cable. Could be LCD screen failure. Zigymantas, one thing i want to know – when this “Screen inverter board” works normally, does it rise temperature, cause the part in my laptop under the “HP” logo on screen gets warm, and, of course, it rise tempereture of lower part of the display. There is a backlight lamp mounted inside the LCD screen, it’s on the bottom of the screen. When the backlight lamp is on, it generates heat.

It’s normal when the bottom part of the display panel is warm. It’s getting warm because of working backlight. By the way, the inverter board also generates some heat when it’s on.

Hello, A few days ago, without any warning sign, after almost two years of trouble-free operation, my laptop screen started to flicker until it finally settled to a gray color, with barely visible vertical stripes. I stopped it forcefully (by pressing the power button for a few seconds). After restart the same gray screen appeared right from the beginning. When I left it turned on, the screen gradually changed color to a blue-green shade (resembling the one from Windows 7’s logon screen). Later that day, when I restarted the laptop, all went ok, at least for a while. After some two hours of operation, the flicker happened again and all the symptoms were back. I plugged in my desktop’s monitor and after displaying the Win7 bootscreen it returned a BSOD (nvlddmkm.sys).

Afterward I could get it to work somewhat reliably only in safe mode with networking support. Before any subsequent start of the laptop, I first tryied using its own display. On several occasions it worked normally and for quite a few hours before it freezed. I also started to get some WHEA errors in the Event log (WHEA-Logger EventID 19 Warning A corrected hardware error has occurred, WHEA-Logger EventID 18 Error A fatal hardware error has occurred.) I then tryied uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers for the chipset (nforce 7000M) and video adapter (nVidia 8600M GS), all without any positive result.

I also suspect these problems might be related to heating issues (the video chip is rated at ~70-80 C). I took a look inside the laptop’s display and there were no apparent signs of damage to any of the components. Now, I can use it only connected to the external monitor and only in safe mode. If I try to use the laptop’s own screen, it only displays the vertical gray lines that eventually turn blueish after leaving it on for a couple of minutes. My biggest concern is whether to buy a new Acer screen or a new laptop alltogether.

I really doubt that your problem is related to the LCD screen. This sounds like a problem with the video card. In a case of LCD screen failure, you still should be able to use the laptop with an external monitor with normal resolution, but you can use it only in Safe mode when only basic video driver is loaded. I’m not familiar with your model. If the video card is integrated into the motherboard, you’ll have to replace the whole motherboard. If the video card is a discrete module, you can replace just the video card.

First of all, your problem is not related to the inverter board. When the bottom 2/3s’ of the screen fails, you still can see the rest of the screen. That means the inverter powers up the backlight and works properly. Your problem could be related to: 1. Loose connection between the video cable and LCD screen.

You can remove the keyboard bezel and try reconnecting the video cable. Start the laptop while the keyboard bezel is removed. Now carefully move the video cable without moving/touching the screen. Does it affect video on the screen.

If the video changes when you move the video cable, it’s possible that you have a bad cable. Apparently there is short inside the cable. Try replacing the cable. Turn on the laptop and wait until video fails. Can you get it back to normal by moving the screen back and forth? Can you get it back to normal if you torque the screen a little bit?

If yes, most likely you have a faulty LCD screen. You’ll have to replace the screen.

You said the laptop works fine for now, but most likely it will fail in the future. After you mentioned vertical blueish lines in a regular pattern on the external screen, I’m 99% positive that you have a faulty video card.

Steven, I have a brand new high end Dell laptop funning Vista. I want to use an external 22″ monitor with it. When I plug in the monitor, the screen has a pink tint. I have tried everything but cannot do anything to make this go away. I plugged the monitor into a desktop (running XP) that I have and the screen looks fine. The video works fine on the external monitor, so there is nothing wrong with the laptop or software. You are using different cables for the TV and external monitor, correct?

I think the cable running from the laptop to the 22″ TV could be bad or not plugged correctly. Try reconnecting the cable and if it doesn’t help, try another cable.

Hey, I have an HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop and I had a screw fall out of the back of it and the screw was connected to the monitor. So I was moving the monitor around quite a bit to fix the screw. When I was moving it around the screen went almost completely black. So now I can see very faint images on the screen but they are almost invisible and almost completely black. I was wondering if you think this is the Blacklight lamp or the Inverter Board or possibly something else. Reseating the cable connection may help. My Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop has been having a display problem: the screen is dark with barely visible images but it works fine with an external monitor. I commented about it on this site a few weeks ago and determined that my inverter needed replacing. I bought a replacement inverter online (not a genuine Dell part). It didn’t look exactly like the one in the latop, but it fit. Once it was installed, the display worked again. Before the screen went dark for like a month or two I noticed that if I run the laptop on it’s own battery it would say battery too low when it’s been on charge for like two days. I have an HP dv9700z with a display problem. Here are the symptoms. The display remains dark on most boot attempts, but eventually after anywhere beteen 2 and 15 reboot attempts, the screen illuminates and works properly until it is turned off (sometimes for up to 12 hrs).

When it is dark there is no image. No HP startup splash screen. As far as I can see, no dim image in the beam of a flashlight (but it is hard to see with the glossy screen in this computer).

The computer boots normally whether or not the display works. An external display works properly and normally whenever it is connected by either VGA, HDMI, or SVideo connector. When connected to an external display and the internal display is not working, the display driver does not see the internal display (only the external display). When connected to an external display and the internal display is working, the driver sees both displays.

When I close the screen when the display is working, the computer goes to sleep normally, and it restarts when the lid is lifted. If the display was working prior to sleeping the computer, the display always works when the computer wakes from sleeping. Jiggling or jostling the computer does not affect the display. If it is not working, it doesn not blink or start working when bumpedand if it is working, jiggling the computer or moving the display does not cause any changes in behavior (no lines, no blinking, no change in brightness). I removed and reseated the connectors to the inverter, and no improvement. The computer has never had any foreign material (liquid, dirt, etc.) get into its internals.

So I am baffled. What do you think it might be? To me it sounds like it might be an inverter, except for the absence of a dim image in the dark displaybut I may just not know what to be looking for.how dark can the image be? I have not tried to move the cable directly when the computer is on, but I have moved it indirectly. I have opened and closed the computer cover both during periods when the screen is not working and during periods when it is working. No matter how much I move the screen, it does not cause a non-working screen to work and it does not cause a working screen to stop working. Does that tell you anything?

I am away from home until Friday. I will take the bezel apart then and see what happens when I move the cable directly. I do have one new piece of information. I saw the reference to the person who recommended diagnosing inverter function using a Multi-meter with a frequency readout. If the inverter was working he got a strong, high frequency (30 – 50 kHz) reading when he held the probes in the vicinity of the inverter output.

If the inverter was not working he got a weak or no reading. I did a similar test using an oscilloscope. I found that during periods when the screen was working I got a strong (a few mV) 55kHz signal when I held the O’scope probe near the inverter output. During periods when the inverter was not working, I got not signal.

So it looks like the inverter output is the issue. Doesn’t say if the problem is a bad inverter or a bad cable/connection to the inverter. But it is probably not the LCD itself (do you agree?). What do you think of testing the input voltage to the inverter?

I think the inverter board works properly only when it’s loaded by the backligth lamp.

Yes, if the backlight lamp is working fine you can get high frequency readings. But what if the backlight is bad? I think in this case you will not get those high frequency readings even if the inverter is good, because it’s not loaded. I could be wrong though. I did a similar test using an oscilloscope.

Check out LCD screens on eBay. Some brand new LCD screens are very inexpensive.

You can find a new one for about $100. I came to the same conclusion that you did and decided to buy a backlight for testing. As soon as I did that, it seems like the display has healed itself (so far about 6 successful reboots in a row).

Once it starts acting up again, I will get a backlight and test it. If the screen’s backlight is bad, I will try and replace itand if I screw up the screen, I will buy a new screen thru eBay. The one i’ve got is j9084 1.00 Toshiba satellite. Thank you again mate. I have a Toshiba A135 S2266 laptop. The powers light on the computer itself comes on and the fan starts up just fine but the screen stay blank both internally and externally and the light on the cd drives is amber instead of green. The cd drive will not open when the eject button is pressed, it only open when i put a pin in the little hole on the side. Could this be a problem with the motherboard, memory or inverter.

The powers light on the computer itself comes on and the fan starts up just fine but the screen stay blank both internally and externally First of all, I would check laptop memory (RAM). Most likely you have two memory modules installed and it’s possible that one of the modules failed. Try removing memory modules one by one and test the laptop with each RAM module separately in each slot.

And the light on the cd drives is amber instead of green I believe when the drive is working the light is always amber, it never turns green. Remove the DVD drive and turn on the laptop.

Most likely this is not related to the graphics card failure. A failed video card would affect image on the entire screen, not just a part of the screen. Just in case test your laptop with video on the external monitor. If the external video works perfectly and there is no pink glow/splash/tint, the problem is not related to the graphics card. I think it’s either failing backlight lamp inside the LCD screen (more likely) or failing inverter board (less likely). From my experience, when the inverter board fails, the backlight lamp stops working completely. In your case only one part of the screen is affected, so I assume this is the backlight lamp failure.

Was the AC adapter plugged when the lightning struck? Maybe the lightning damaged the AC adapter. After that the laptop worked until the battery got discharged. Now you cannot turn it on because the battery has no charge and AC adapter is dead.

I would test the AC adapter first. If the lightning struck when the AC adapter was unplugged and now the laptop is dead, probably it damaged the motherboard. Can you start the laptop just from AC adapter when the battery is removed? Can you see any LED lights on the front when AC adapter is plugged in? Yes the Adapter was plugged in – I was using the laptop, and yes my husband checked the adapter. I cannot start the machine at all; with or without the battery removed and just the adapter. When I removed the battery the first time it powered up and the screen showed briefly, but then it went dead again.

You still should be able to start the laptop when inverter fails but the image on the screen will be very dark. In your case the laptop will not turn on at all and there are no LED lights. Assuming that your AC adapter is good, I’m almost positive you have bad motherboard. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545. The screen cracked so I replaced it.

If your parts worked on another laptop and parts from another working laptop didn’t work in your machine, most likely there is a problem with the motherboard. By the way, check the lid close switch. I don’t know off the top of my head if the lid close switch in your laptop is magnetic or regular button, but that could be the problem. It’s possible that the lid close switch got stuck in the “closed” position and the laptop “thinks” that the display is closed even when it’s open. If the lid close switch is a regular button, try tapping on the switch, hopefully it will work.

Did you purchase a compatible replacement screen? Maybe the screen wasn’t compatible and you fried the motherboard when installed it into the laptop. Just in case. I’m not sure if it’s going to help but try it anyway. Boot your laptop with an external monitor.

Go to the device manager and delete (uninstall) the display adapters and monitors. Restart the laptop and test again. I actually mentioned the possibility of that button/sensor being stuck and the guy just said “I’m sure the technician checked it.” I ordered the wrong screen at first but didn’t try to install it since I could tell they weren’t compatible but now I’m sure I have the right one.

I’ve done it many times myself on many different laptops. The laptop should start properly, detect all missing (uninstalled) hardware and reinstall drivers automatically.

I found information that led me to believe I was having a problem with my backlight inverter. On startup the picture would flicker for a few seconds then go out. I ordered a backlight inverter for my laptop and it did not illuminate the screen. The old one did but continued to go out. I got another one and installed it.

The backlight now seems to illuminate the screen but no images come up. I can here the computer starting up and the sound of the windows screen sounds but nothing shows up on screen. Now when I tried reinstalling the old inverter it does the same thing as the new one.

I’m 95% positive that replacing the LCD screen will fix the problem. Just in case, try reconnecting the LCD cable on both ends – on the motherboard and back side of the LCD screen. That’s strange! I doubt that your second problem is related to the inverter board. It’s possible you have two separate issues.

Maybe memory is bad? Try removing memory modules one at a time. Test your laptop with each memory module separately. If one of the modules is bad, the laptop will start properly when the bad module is removed. Hey Repairman, Thanks for the quick reply.

I tested the laptop with each SIMM, and with no SIMMS, and also with no hard disk. Behaviour was the same. One interesting thing that I did not note before, is, when first turned on the fan comes off, then shuts off with the notebook. But when it then enters its try-try-again power-off-power-on loop, the fan does not come on. Do you think I have shorted something in the LCD/inverter setup? Or have I just got really bad luck and everything is failing all together? Cory, I have a secondary power supply that goes with me for occasional use, and its adjustable.

I’ve just found that the last time I used this adapter, was just as the original screen problem popped up. I’ve found that the switch had migrated to 24V instead of 19V. Is there any chance my problems are contained to? One part that I could replace? If you used 24V instead of 19V, it’s possible that you damaged the motherboard. I cannot tell if that’s the case without looking at the laptop.

This sounds like the motherboard failure but I could be wrong. Hi Repair Man, Similar problem to what I have read so far. Just got a Toshiba Netbook NB305, and it took a lot of pressure to the top cover.

Basically, it got sat on while it had some stuff on the cover (keys, pocket knife, etc.). It looks like the “point load” exerted itself on the little board that’s taped to the back of the LCD screen. The LCD screen itself doesn’t look traumatized.

So here’s the problem: At first, when powered up, the screen locked “washed out”; quite bright, but no contrast. I thought “uh oh, big problems”. So while the unit was powered up, I gave the screen a bit of a “twist”; basically held both top corners and gave it a bit of torsion, but nothing outlandish.

The screen responded by flashing “normal” colors a couple of times, but now, the colors look like they are “inverted” with a little loss of brightness to boot. And “twisting” the screen no longer has any effect. I took it apart and powered it up, and the back side of the screen looks quite bright, it looks like the backlight is workng fine.

I can even navigate on the screen, but the colours look reversed. Question: did my LCD sereen bite it (even though it shows no sign of “cracks” etc.), or is it the little board attached to the back of the screen the has a toasted chip because of being squished by that point load? I downloaded the “Powerstrip” utility and it seems to be able to compensate for about 90% of my screen’s problems. I inverted the gamma, and most of the colours now display correctly but it seems with altered saturation, and a hint of “blurriness”. The “blurriness” does not manifest itsself as poor contrast or washed out colour, or poor brightness, but rather perhaps where there is shading, it is slightly the wrong colour so the display appears a little “off”. Also, there are faint horizontal bars (about six to eight) scrolling up the screen at lower brightness levels.

The “bars” look like the bars when an a CRT screen is videoed. The bars fade out to almost imperceptible when the brightness is set to max, but then the colours are bit off. Soon as the brightness is turned down a bit, the colours look better, but the bars return a bit, but this seems to be the best “comprimise setting” to make the screen usuable. So my question: Do I need to replace the screen itself?

Or the circuit board taped to the back of the screen (or is this board part of the screen)? Or is it the inverter board (which I’m not sure is damaged because the weight did not get exerted on the “hinge” part of the computer.

Turn on the laptop, enter the BIOS setup menu and find the hard drive diagnostics utility. Run this utility.

If the hard drive fails test, you’ll have to replace it with a new one. Some HP laptops also have memory diagnostic utility in the BIOS menu.

Alternatively, you can use Memtest86+. If memory fails test, replace it. HP dv6000 GETTING FOUR SMALL SCREEN, PLEASE HELP I have a HP dv6000 laptop, every time a turn it on I get four small screens about 4″x5″ each. This happens as soon as the BIOS screen appears and it stays like that even after windows loads up. Right now it is basically useless since the fonts are too small to be read.

I have checked almost all the post on this page and does not look like an inverter problem. Do I have to change the screen? But again all I know is what I have read on this great site. I exchanged the inverter for one from an older Vaio Laptop (model: PCG-K215B) that I had. NOW: the backlight is working constantly but is much much dimmer.

Sometimes it becomes brighter (as bright as it should be) for a second but then becomes dim again. ALSO: I cannot control the brightness anymore, not by using the Fn/F6 keys, neither by going into the battery/brightness settings. That is: I can increase or decrese the brightness settings but it has no effect whatsoever. Is the inverter not up to the task of running with my newer vaio model?

Reconnect cable connections on the LCD screen, inverter, motherboard. Did backligth work on the cracked screen?

Maybe the new screen is defective? Try replacing the inverter board.

I sounds like the inverter because after reading some of your comments, an external monitor can be used and if you take a flashlight aim it at the screen from the corner you can see everything. Is it difficult to replace the inverter yourself? Could be bad inverter OR bad baclight lamp inside the screen.

First, I would try replacing the inverter board. If it doesn’t help, try replacing the LCD screen.

It should be relatively easy but I don’t know your technical skills. You’ll have to remove the screen bezel. The inverter should be located somewhere below the LCD screen. Bad inverter? Nope, doesn’t sound like inverter. A bad inverter board cannot cause multicolored static snow. Most likely it’s either bad video cable or LCD screen failure. Here’s what you can try. Carefully move the video cable (without touching the screen) while the laptop is turned on. Will it affect image on the screen at all?

If image changes when you move the cable, most likely the cable is bad. If image not affected and you get just garbled image, probably you have bad screen. I assume the laptop works fine with an external monitor, right? If external video is garbled too, this is video card failure. Maybe the backlight lamp inside the screen is not compatible with inverter board. I’ve replaced many screens on Toshiba laptops but I never had a problem like that. On the other hand, finding the right screen for a Dell laptop could be challenging. If you install a wrong screen into a Dell laptop the brightness doesn’t work properly. It’s hard to tell what is wrong. If moving the display panel temporarily fixing the problem, it could be just loose connection somewhere inside the display panel. I would try reconnecting the video cable on the motherboard and back of the LCD screen first. You can disassemble the display panel and try moving the video cable while the laptop is turned on. If moving the cable affects image on the screen, it’s possible you have a bad cable.

I’m not sure what’s going on here. Can you boot the laptop in normal mode and before it hits the welcome screen, reduce the screen brightness via keyboard shortcut? Will it stay on in normal mode with reduced brightness?

Repair Man, The screen will no longer respond to the brightness commands / key board short cuts. The slider will appear, and I can adjust to max and min brightness with no change. I installed some generic ATI drivers and was able to get the video card to work at the screens native resolution and full brightness. However, the laptop screen will not respond to any brightness commands – a minor annoyance.

What if you enter the BIOS setup menu and try using the brightness shortcut in BIOS? Can you change screen brightness when the laptop booted to the BIOS menu? MevaD, Panasonic CF-W4. Typical inverter fault – dim screen. Replaced with inverter from a CF-T1. Screen lights up fine but display has lots of rapidly moving lines on it.

By replacing the inverter board you fixed the backlight problem and now you have another one. First of all, test your laptop with an external monitor. Find our if external image also has same problem. If image on the external monitor is fine, most likely you have one of the following: 1.

Loose connection between the video cable and motherboard/LCD screen. Try reconnecting the cable first.

Bad video cable. Bad LCD screen. If all screens in your laptops are compatible, you can use a known good screen from one laptop to test another laptop.

Lining on a prayer, I have an all in one Vaio desktop. When I turn it on the screen is black. But when I press the monitor button, the screen shows up perfect but only for 4 seconds. Computer otherwise runs fine. Can download programs, have a DVD movie run etc.

MK, My laptop (Presario CQ40) screen flickering with several lines & its sometimes shifted up & down a few times too. What is the main cause? First of all, test your laptop with an external monitor. If external video works fine, your problem is inside the display panel.

It could be bad connection between the video cable and motherboard or LCD screen, bad video cable or failing LCD screen. Try reconnecting the video cable on both ends. This might help. Try moving the video cable while the laptop is turned on. If moving the cable affects image on the screen, probably it’s bad cable. Try replacing the cable. If reconnecting the cable doesn’t help and moving the cable doesn’t affect image on the screen at all, probably you have a problem with the LCD screen.

Windows does not seem to be getting status of the brightness level at that time as it shows irrelevant level at power management tool. This happens with either drivers from Windows or Lenovo. When laptop goes to sleep mode or is shut down the backlight stays on with all the other components off.

Apparently you have an LED backligt screen installed in our HP Pavilion dv7 notebook. A LED screen doesn’t require an inverter board. By the way, some Pavilion dv7 notebooks come with a regular LCD screen. If that’s the case, the inverter mounted below the screen. Why did you take apart the display panel. It doesn’t sound like a problem with the screen at all. Did you have a chance to test your AC adapter?

It’s possible the AC adapter failed and the battery doesn’t have enough charge to start the laptop. Test your AC adapter first. Usually it’s located somewhere close to the left or right hinge. It’s a small button which activates sleep/hibernate mode when the display is closed. It’s possible the lid close switch button is stuck inside the case. Try tapping on the lid close when the laptop is turned on.

Hello, I did what you advised and the brightness indeed cannot be controlled from BIOS which confirms this is the hardware issue. However when LENOVO person was testing my laptop during a whole day using a new disk snapshot it was functioning well all through the day. They even left an intensive NVidea test for the whole night and nothing happened with the backlight control. What additional factor do you thnk can lead to the failure? Another fact is that the brightness control always recoveres in about an hour after failure to fail again in some time. To the run with reduced brightness – I normally run it at 20-30% level and it fails. I can see a whole group of people complaining to this kind of issue on lenovo forum but they still cannot recognize a root cause: Thank you for your replies.

It sounds more like LCD screen (maybe backlight lamp) related failure. Is this a typical symptom relating to LCD inverter? When inverter fails, the whole screen goes very dark. A faulty inverter board cannot cause any image distortion on the screen. Also, typically how much it will cost to replace inverter and the LCD panel for my model? Depends on the shop.

Also, it’s possible to replace the screen at home. Alexey, I have reproduced the backlight issue using different hard drive and OS snapshot so the problem with hardware is confirmed.

That’s what I thought. I’m pretty sure this is hardware related failure. Can the Wifi or sound devices sit on the same bus and therefore affect and overload the backlight components? I don’t think so. By the way, I just googled your laptop model and it looks like you have LED backligth screen! Do you know if you have a LED screen inside?

It means there is no inverter board. The screen brightness controlled by the motherboard. Is there any newer BIOS available for downloads? It’s possible Lenovo fixed this issue with the BIOS update.

Strange case of laptop display running fine up to maximum brightness, but only on battery power. Clues: 1) Laptop runs perfect on battery only, up to max brightness settings (set via the bios and FN key control). 2) Perfect on AC power only if display is set at 50% brightness (on AC). 4) New AC chargers (2 tried), same problem. Does MB regulate AC adapter voltage before sending it on to the inverter, or does the inverter manage everything? This is a 2007 Dell Inspiron 1720 on Vista.

Just to make sure it’s not connection related problem. Try replacing the video cable. Try replacing the LCD screen. The backlight failed on my HP dv6910us (dv6700 family) and so I replaced the inverter board and powered it back up on the battery and the screen bcame back just fine. After about 20 minutes I plugged in the power adapter as the battery was getting discharged and the inverter board failed instantly. I replaced the board a second time and again powered up the laptop on the battery and the screen was fine again. I powered it down and plugged in the power adapter and tried turning it on and the inverter immediately failed again.

I can see that the computer is working fine by brightly illuminating the screen externally and can shut it down normally. Do you think the power adapter may be generating a spike which is causing the inverter to fail or might the lamp be going south and need to be replaced? I don’t think this is inverter related problem. There is a chance of bad connection between the video cable and motherboard (of video card). Try reconnecting the cable first. If it doesn’t help, I think this is motherboard related problem.

Most likely there is a micro crack somewhere on the motherboard. When you apply some pressure on the motherboard or hold the laptop on the left corner, you flex the motherboard and make it work for a while. Also, make sure all wires are routed correctly and there is no loose screes inside. Maybe something is shorting the motherboard. If you have to guess, try replacing the inverter board first. It’s relatively easy to replace and shouldn’t be expensive. Ken, My HP Pavillion dv9000 works fine except every time I boot it up it shows black and purple spots on the display screen. Typically they are at the top and bottom of my screen and they are different shapes and sizes.

What can I do? Test your laptop with an external monitor. If external image works fine and has no black and purple spots, I think you might have a problem with the LCD screen. Just in case, you can try reconnecting video cable on both ends to make sure it’s not connection related failure. If reconnecting the cable doesn’t help, I guess you’ll have to replace the LCD screen. If same spots appear on the external monitor, try reinstalling the video driver. John, The backlight failed on my HP dv6910us (dv6700 family) and so I replaced the inverter board and powered it back up on the battery and the screen bcame back just fine.

After about 20 minutes I plugged in the power adapter as the battery was getting discharged and the inverter board failed instantly. I replaced the board a second time and again powered up the laptop on the battery and the screen was fine again. I powered it down and plugged in the power adapter and tried turning it on and the inverter immediately failed again. I can see that the computer is working fine by brightly illuminating the screen externally and can shut it down normally. Do you think the power adapter may be generating a spike which is causing the inverter to fail or might the lamp be going south and need to be replaced?

The backlight brightness looked normal when powered up on the battery and the brightness controls worked. It’s hard to tell what is causing this failure. There is a chance the problem somehow related to the backlight lamp.

Maybe the backlight lamp can handle lower brightness (when laptop runs on the battery) but fails as soon as you plug the AC adapter (when screen brightness goes up). What if you lower LCD screen brightness settings for AC mode? Will the screen stay on this way? Daniel smith, I have a gateway modelmx3416.

The screen boots up for a seconds and then goes dark with faint images on screen. I am thinking of trying an inverter Could be bad inverter or backlight lamp failure. If you have to guess, try replacing the inverter board first. When I hook up to a monitor the monitor also works for a few seconds and then goes to sleep.

It’s possible the external video goes to sleep because the video signal goes to the laptop screen. Can you switch to the external monitor using a keyboard shortcut? Something like Fn key plus one of the Fx keys? If still nothing, it’s necessary to disconnect video cable from the motherboard and test with an external monitor again. If external video still doesn’t work even with video cable unplugged, this could be motherboard failure. Caleb, I have an Inspiron 640m.

When it boots the Dell logo will flicker on briefly, then the screen goes black. The LCD is still working as you can see the picture under a lamp. The VGA out works also. I tried putting in a different inverter, but the new one doesn’t even flicker the Dell logo. It looks a little different but is supposed to be compatible. Could the bulb be at fault?

It’s very likely that your problem related to the backlight lamp failure. The backlight lamp mounted inside the screen and very hard to replace. Basically, if the lamp fails you have to replace the whole LCD screen. You can search for a replacementDell Inspiron 640m screen on ebay. You have to be careful when replacing screen on a Dell laptop.

Dell laptops are very picky and if you install a wrong screen, the brigness will not work properly. The screen will light up but will not be as bright as before. The inverter board has to match the screen in order to work correctly. Instead of replacing just the scree, you can replace the whole display assemlby which includes the LCD screen, inverter, cable, plastic covers, etc Or search for a new replacement screen which comes with the inverter board.

Turned it on the other day and the video was sideways, and then went black. Can hook it up via s-video cable to an external monitor with no troubles. Randomly the screen started working again yesterday, but today it is black again – completely black. Does this sound like the inverter or lcd screen? Or should I be looking at motherboard issues? Did you mean HP Pavilion DV2500? If the screen is completely black AND blank (there is no dim image), this could be video cable related failure.

Maybe loose connection between the video cable and motherboard. I would try reconnecting the cable connection first, it’s located under the keyboard. I have a magnetic hibernation lid switch and the magnet fell out when I took the bezel off. In locating the switch with the magnet I noticed the screen came on for a good while. Then it went off. Thanks and have a great day. Nick, I have an ASUS laptop and when I plug in to AC power the laptop screen goes black with a very dim image. I am able to use s-video and plug into a external monitor. When I unplug the AC power cable the image returns entirely on the laptop monitor. Hard to tell what is wrong but here’s my guess. This could be either bad inverter or backlight lamp. It’s possible the screen works fine when the laptop running on battery power because you have lower LCD screen brightness settings for the battery mode.

When the laptop runs in battery mode, the screen backlight doesn’t take much power from the inverter and the screen stays on. As soon as you plug the AC adapter, the laptop goes into A/C mode and the backlight/inverter cannot handle it. Because of that the backlight turns off. This is just a guess.

Here’s what you can try. Start your laptop without AC, finds LCD screen brightness settings and lower screen brigntness for AC mode. Now start your laptop with AC adapter. Most likely this is backlight lamp failure, which has same symptoms as inverter failure (screen goes very dark but still has very faint image). I don’t think you have a problem with the magnetic switch, it’s not a very common failure. Some laptops can switch to the external monitor only after Windows OS completely loaded.

You can try switching to the external monitor using a keyboards shortcut. It’s the Fn key and one of the F* keys.

Hello, I bought two used dell D620 laptops for the kids school work. Nice old laptops except for the weak displays. One still had warranty and I was able to replace it with a new bright one, and the other still has the weak screen. I was wondering if replacing either, or both the inverter and the back-light could restore the brightness back into it and hopefully avoid having to spend near $200 for a new display. I did read many of the blogs here and couldn’t find one with my exact issue, but haven’t read them all, so I apologize if I’m repeating a question that you may have already answered. We sure do appreciate your time and support. My HP DV5 laptop symptoms are a little different.

I cannot tell what is wrong without seeing the screen. Probably it’s just the backlight lamp is getting old and is not as bright as new. Replacing the backlight lamp is not an easy procedure. If you have a problem with the backlight lamp, I would suggest replacing the whole screen. Make sure to find the right screen. In Dell laptops the inverter board must match the screen. If it doesn’t match, the brightness will not work properly.

When I have to replace the screen in a Dell laptop, I usually buy it with the inverter attached to make the inverter matches the backlight. Could be bad connection between the video cable and motherboard or LCD screen. Firs I would try reseating the video cable on both ends and test the laptop again. Also, it’s possible you have a pinched wire inside the video harness. If that’s the case, you’ll have to replace the video cable. Leonardo, I do not have video, except for a brief moment when “Windows” starts and I get a white screen. Could be a inverter problem?

I don’t think this is inverter related failure. You still can see the screen (even though it’s white), it means the inverter works properly. Can you test your laptop with an external monitor? Can you get video on the external monitor? When laptop screen goes white, it means there is no data signal coming from the motherboard.

This could be bad connection between the video cable and LCD screen. Try reseating video cable connector on the back of the screen.

Hi, I smashed my old screen for my dell vostro 1700 (17″) a long time ago, and replaced it with a 15.4 inch out of another dead laptop, worked fine, except the brightness, its dull and when you turn it up or down just is random to how bright it goes. I have tried to change it for a 17inch screen I received, the back-light comes on, but still the problem of brightness everywhere but no picture. I blamed the screen, and ordered another one, same problem. But the 15inch still works fine. I noticed on the inverter 2 points where it screwed to the original screen which seem to have a plate for to conduct electricity. Could this be why I’m getting no picture?

The screen brightness didn’t work properly because the inverter board didn’t match the LCD screen. I’ve noticed same problem with many different Dell laptop.

Now, when I have to replace the screen, I make sure to buy one which has inverter attached. In this case it should work properly. I have tried to change it for a 17inch screen I received, the back-light comes on, but still the problem of brightness everywhere but no picture. I blamed the screen, and ordered another one, same problem. But the 15inch still works fine. Maybe 17″ screens you are getting either bad or not compatible.

If you want to install a compatible screen, search by the part number from the original 17″ screen. The 15″ screen still showing the image, it means the laptop operates properly. I guess new 17″ screens have different native resolution from the original screen and because of that do not work properly. This is just a guess. Hi there, I have a pretty tough issue. Hi, Great site. I have a Compaq 8510p. The screen will appear ok and then slowly deteriorate into black. If I tweak the top left corner of the screen the picture will come back. As soon as I let go the picture deteriorates again.

This doesn’t sound like inverter related problem. Take a look inside the video cable connector on the motherboard. Maybe you accidentally damaged pins inside the connector. Are you sure the new cable is 100% compatible with the laptop? Could be wrong video cable. Maybe the switch suck inside the housing and the laptop “thinks” the display is closes even when it’s open. Try tapping on the switch, maybe you can release it. Got the new backlight in today, hooked it up and it won’t turn on. I played with the lid switch button till I’ve got a dent in my finger, that didn’t work! I even hooked up the old inverter and got nothing at all.

So I replaced them back to where it came from and then HP works fine. Very strange. I also had a newly fixed HP Pavilion (video chip stuff) so I think I should share a little bit.

I discovered that. I actually soldered with a hair dryer and a lot of aluminum foils and a soda can. I wrapped all the hp mobo around except a 1×1 centimeter square. And then I heated with hairdryer. I really wasn’t sure what temperature did I reach.

But I tried to flash it without melting that chip. And then after it cooled down I used the ARCTIC SILVER 5 thermal stuff and used Penny Fix. So then that family HP has been working fine since then Before fix it was broke “suffocation” fixed it to work but it works with sub-90 degrees celcius.

Ok so one night my backlight stopped working so naturally i assume the inverter is to blame and order a replacement. After replacing the inverter success the screen lights up again the problem now is after around 5 mins the inverter makes a high pitched sound and generates alot of heat followed by the screen loosing the light off the left side of the screen if left long enough before shutting down the backlight turns off completely i am inclined to believe the new inverter is faulty any ideas on the cause? Precisely, my laptop is showing signs both for LCD lamp failure, and Inverter failure. But here are my observations: 1) when i close and reopen the lid, it sometimes lightens up but only for some time. 2) If it tilt the lid backwards, more than about 110 degrees, it blacks out again 3) sometimes it blacks out by itself 4) When i slide my hand phone over the hinge (that is bottom of the screen, and on the power button’s panel), or let me say, over the inverter’s position, it lightens up again. With this can i say it’s inverter failure?

I came back on when you pressed brighten. I have wiped Vista, and loaded XP Pro. Now, the backlight goes off, when you run on battery, and comes back on, when you plug in the charger.

Weird that a change of windows should affect it. Also, the cmos setup works ok on battery, but the backlight goes out when windows runs. Plug in the charger, and all is ok, nice and bright. Most likely this is one of the following: 1. Bad connection between the video cable and motherboard. This connector located under the keyboard cover close to the left hinge. Try reconnecting the cable first. If reconnecting the cable doesn’t help, probably the cable itself is bad.

I’ve seem video cables going bad on DV9000 series. Try replacing the cable. Bjarne, Replaced my LCD screen on my Dell Inspiron 6000 wich had cracked. Works fine, but the screen is very bright and cannot be controlled with the Fn+ up or down keys as normal. Screen resolution is the same. Had to reshape the bezel and cut some plastic from the end of the inverter board to make it fit as the new cable to the backlight lamp was to short. It’s possible the new screen is very bright because the old inverter board doesn’t match the backlight lamp.

In Dell laptops the inverter must match the LCD screen. Otherwise the backlight will not work properly.

When you buy a new screen for your Dell laptop you have to make sure the screen is designed for Dell and it comes with the inverter board attached. Usually the part number or model number printed somewhere on the inverter board. After that you can google the part/model number or search on eBay. Searching by the part/model number is the best way to find a compatible inverter. Hi repair man, I have a Sony vaio ar31s which has of a 2 days ago has lost the ability to display the color black. Anything that was black is now green!

I’ve connected to different monitors and have not been able to extend or duplicate my display on either of them. I can however using the hdmi port onto my flat screen TV.

I don’t think its the inverter as the display works but just shows black as green. I’m more drawn towards the Lcd cable or laptop monitor. Is the only way to test lcd cable is to replace it?

If same problem appears on the external video, most likely this it graphics card failure. @ yasser, i replace my notebook LCD with a new one then whats happening is when i close the screen the screen still working i check the power option and its ok i isntalled a new windows and the problem still I think I know what happened. Most likely your laptop has a magnetic lid close switch – a small magnet located under the screen bezel activates the switch located somewhere on the motherboard.

I think when you removed the old screen, you accidentally pulled the magnet from its place. Now you have a new screen but there is no magnet.

That’s why when you close the display, nothing happens. Take a look at the old screen, find the magnet and place it back into the proper place (somewhere under the screen bezel). @ Mike Mann, I have a Acer Extensa 4630z and the bottom 1/4 inch of LCD flickers like a wave moving up and down when tested on a external monitor it shows no sign of problems.

This LT have some liquid spilled on it(not sure where)and I’m wondering if this problem could be the inverter or power switch board. This is not inverter failure, that’s for sure. This sounds like LCD screen failure. I don’t think this is related to liquid spill although possible. Also keyboard in not working but the rest of the LT appears to work fine. Probably that’s where the liquid damage is. Have you tested the laptop with an external USB keyboard?

Is everything working fine? If yes, try replacing the laptop keyboard.

@ Paul, I have a hp dv 2000. Sometimes the screen will come on sometimes it won’t. When it does not it will not even post. When it does not post it will not go to external monitor either. Could this be an inverter? No, this doesn’t sound like inverter failure.

When inverter fails, you only lose screen backlight. Everything should work just fine. Have replaced the ram checked connections on mb. Tried another battery. It’s so weird because when i plug power in it works 4 out of 5 times. Any guess to what the problem is. Do you have any problem with internal wireless card or sound?

When they fail, it’s one of the symptoms of the graphics card failure on HP Pavilion dv2000/dv6000/dv9000 laptops. @ Paul, Yes i am actually having troubles with wireless.

Sound works great though. I guess if it is video card it would eventually stop working all together. HP Pavilion dv2000/dv6000/dv9000 laptops are know for the graphics card failure.

One of the symptoms – the wireless card stops working. You turn on the wireless switch, but the LED remains orange (suppose to be blue).

Is it what you are experiencing? The graphics fails because NVIDIA chip separates from the motherboard. If that’s the case, the laptop not worth fixing because it’s necessary to replace the motherboard. @ Jake, I brought a replacement screen off Ebay to replace broken on my Sony Vaio. It comes on (dark) but the backlight doesn’t work. Did you have light on the broken screen?

If the original (cracked) screen was lighting up, you can try installing it again and see if the backlight still works. Maybe your new screen is defective. Screen vendor wants me to check a inverter fuse on the motherboard.

Not sure where it would be located and how feasible it would be to replace. Sorry cannot help here. I don’t fix motherboards on the component level. You cannot use just any inverter. It has to be married to your screen. Check the serial numbers on the back of your screen then look up the inverter part that GOES WITH THE SCREEN.

Then if that “matched” pair still don’t work it will be your motherboard since the chip on the motherboard for video is alien to the new set of screen and matching inverter. Unless of course you replaced the screen initially with the exact same screen this motherboard chip wants and purchased the exact precise inverter for that exact same replacement screen, all should work. If not, its the motherboard. But you can also buy these inverters that supposedly can translate these issues, but I dunno if they actually work.

Thinking of buying one to see. My laptop repair had all these problems as mentioned in this forum. Its so easy to overlook that WE might have been successful right from the start if we married our screens to their rightful inverters. Very important. Next if still doesn’t work, i’d change out the cable connector to these, and third if still no luck, its def the motherboard chip capability. Which shouldn’t be the case if the screen is the exact one the motherboard wants. Hi, I have got an Acer Extensa 4230.

The problem is that the screen freezes, getting lines, the image is not clear, top of the screen moves to the bottom, etc. Everything works as it should, just the screen freezes (laptop is operating normally during that time, just can’t see what is happening).

I did notice that when pressed the bottom of the screen where is the inverter it goes back and works fine for some time, seems to get better after warming up. Is it possible that the freezing and image distortion is a fault of faulty inverter? The laptop have been cleaned but it didn’t stop screen freezing.

The memory and hard drive are tested for errors. Screen seems to be working normally when pressed on the bottom of the screen in the middle (under actual LCD) as mentioned. It is just nobody mention those effects caused by faulty inverter. Is it inverter or something else? Thanks in advance.

Respected Sir, I am got a acer aspire e1-572g, its screen starts flickring on touching/moving the lid, so i open my laptop (diy) to fix if there is any bad connection b/w connectors. But than after screen is not working. When i starts my laptop its working fine but screen got little bit more darker in bottom ( half in dark grey and half part in black tone ) i am also able to hear the sound of startup window and playing songs/video but no screen also try one time to connect with external projector but no video output comes. Pls help and reply asap.
